Tuesday
I climbed up to Mamode Camp, a pass at 1,200 meters. It wasn’t very difficult, but I stopped several times. The weather wasn’t great, so I didn’t get to fully appreciate the beauty of the forest.
I went up via “La Providence” and came back down via Bellepierre, which is a bit steeper, so I had my hands on the brakes the whole time.
Wednesday
Tour of the Payet et Rivière sugar mill : an artisanal distillery. The former owners of the large Bois Rouge distillery in Saint-André have started making rum again, but are focusing more on niche products derived from sugarcane, such as a type of caramel called Galibé. They make their “traditional” rum not from molasses but from a derivative.
I taste their traditional rum : very fragrant, not very strong, but... I don’t feel like drinking it... On the other hand, their agricultural rum, which is over 50% ABV, goes down a treat 😎 .
I buy two small jars of Galibé and head back to Saint-Denis.
