Walks to Letea

For two lei I cross the Danube on a boat with my bike. The road is a little bumpy and there is a lot of wind but it’s not very far. The road runs along a canal and at first I see more boats than cars!
Passing through the hamlet of Cardon, a mixture of moorland and marshes: birds, cows and horses that I was told were wild.
But not far from Letea a large body of water cuts the road... I could try to get through by stepping into the slush.... A utility vehicle passes with water to the top of the wheels.... I try to go around but after a few hundred meters I give up...

The swamp by boat

The next day my host asked me to come with him, he had to accompany two tourists visiting the marsh. A three-hour walk, perfect!
The impression of seeing the delta from the inside: you go from the Danube to a canal, then to another canal and then to a lake.... Then another lake, another canal....

I realize that we are following a path and that this path is the one that leads to Sfantu-Gheorgia where I was planning to cycle the next day... But a little further on this path seems to me to be under the water.... Not only is it underwater, but we will even pass over it a little later to go to the sea. In fact, at this point it is an overflow weir that drains off water that is too high. With these drainage systems Sulina hasn’t been flooded for 50 years!
My exit to Sfantu-Gheogie seems compromised....

The fisherman who is with us is enjoying himself.
Once we find the right spot in the current he catches a fish almost every time he throws!

The cemetery

Sulina was a very cosmopolitan city and aEuropean Danube Commission played a very important role until the Second World War. The cemetery is very surprising with areas dedicated to each religion or nationality, Catholic, Orthodox, English, Italian, Turkish and Jewish.

And in the evening, over coffee, some traditional dances performed by young people from Sulina.

Tomorrow, start of the return trip with a stop in Tulcea.
